Background

Why was VOIP Important for Cook County?

  • It streamlined the County’s telecommunications operating model.
  • It allowed Cook County to consolidate its telecommunications and data infrastructure, instead of using separate lines and switches for each — saving the County money.

What is VOIP?

VOIP is a method for using a group of tools to deliver audio or multimedia communications over Internet networks. Broadband phone service, for example, is a type of VOIP communication. VOIP can be used for audio, video, text messages or even faxing. The user experience of making a phone call via VOIP is the same as any other type of call.

While the buttons and operation of the new phones is similar, the new phones have enhanced features for consideration. For instance, voicemail can be integrated with County email and a single phone number can ringing both at your desk and your cell.
