About: Sustainability is our broad term for spotlighting our belief in a Forest Park that is a creative learning community striving to engage with green, sustainable practices; an inclusive community that is taking action towards towards digital and other forms of equity and inclusion.  With this event, we hope to excite and empower the community about issues from energy use to composting to reducing plastic, offering opportunities to get involved in activism, to do crafts and learn, and also personally cross the digital divide or help others cross it.  We are hoping for at least 100 people to come out.  In order to add a little incentive to the community to participate, we'll have a drawing for several free computers sourced through partner PCs for People.

Virtual Art Factory Demonstration

1. Foster Creativity and Technical Proficiency: We aim to encourage out-of-the-box thinking and equip participants with hands-on experience in the burgeoning field of digital art.

About: In 2023 we held the first Day of Equity webinar event and were met with rave reviews. We continued offering a free monthly webinar series and generally see anywhere from 150-300 registrants per month. At the end of every webinar, we raffle off a training resource to three lucky winners, with an average value of $300 / course. We choose up to the minute subject matter with a focus on equity in the digital inclusion landscape. Previous topics have included:  How to Support Your Digital Navigator, Culturally Inclusive Digital Equity Curriculum, AI & Digital Inclusion, Celebrating Librarians: The Original Digital Navigators!, Mental Health Matters, PRIDE in Digital Inclusion,  Professional Graces:  Working with Social Anxieties, and this month's hot topic is: Digital Inclusion and College Students. We expect (based upon the popularity and growth of our web series) to see 1500-2000 registrants throughout the day, and hope for even more.

Community Writers Workshop

About: There will be a one on one coaching session for adults and youth that want a 30 minute session about professional development: (create resumes, create cover letters, set up LinkedIn profiles, and navigate job search engines), or Basic Digital Literacy skills: (basic hardware and software for computer, covering fundamental computer usage, internet navigation, and essential software like word processors and email). There will be 12 slots available, and will be for those who want an intimate learning lesson, especially for those who are insecure/ need help with their digital learning skills. Slots are open for English and Spanish. I know it will be a success by asking them to answer a survey at the end of the session that will be asking them if they want to be provided by resources that we offer towards digital literacy, and add them to registration forms for their digital learning needs. During the coaching session, I will have personal conversation about their needs and have a more of an understanding of the resources that might help them.

About: PODER currently has the capacity for 3-4 cohorts per year of a 9-week digital skills class from UnidosUS for community members in Spanish or English. With hopeful inclusion in the upcoming digital equity funding, we plan to increase our offerings because basic awareness and resources of digital tools are lacking in our service area on the SW side of Chicago. We plan to use this event to promote our course and our wraparound services in general by giving a primer on the content to people in the community. We hope to reach those in the SW side of Chicago who don't know about our course, know about our course and would like to learn more, and educate anyone in attendance about a few basic skills and resources to follow. We hope to have at least 30 and up to 50 in-person attendees and success would mean more overall engagement with our organization and specifically increase in interested participation in future cohorts of our digital skills class.


Sphero Battlebots: Intro to Coding

About: Get ready to dive into robotics and coding with Sphero BOLT. This round, programmable robot is perfect for coders of all levels, from beginners to pros. Use your creativity to build your very own BattleBot using plastic cups, craft sticks, skewers, and other materials. Do not miss out on the chance to claim victory in the BattleBot showdown!  Chromebooks will be provided!

Our main goal is to teach teens how to do basic coding using robotics. Our goal is to reach 15-20 students (ages 6th through 12th grade) and we will know the program is a success if the students are able to understand the basics of coding and get the robotics to do simple functions.


Community Device Giveaway
