Cook County Board Approves Department of Transportation and Highways Infrastructure Projects

Last week, the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved agreements between the County’s Department of Transportation and Highways with local municipalities. The intergovernmental agreements are designed to bolster economic development and quality of life throughout Cook County.

City of Northlake

Cook County awarded a $50,000 2019 Invest in Cook grant for a phase I engineering study of Railroad Avenue, a major freight trucking corridor within the City of Northlake that has come to the end of its useful life. This project will bring Railroad Avenue between North Avenue and Champion Road up to modern design standards for safety and efficiency and improve the movement of trucks in the area. Approximately 4,200 vehicles travel Railroad Avenue daily. The roadway plays a vital role in connecting commercial and industrial properties and the Union Pacific intermodal facility to major freight corridors like North Avenue, I-290 and I-294. 

Village of Evergreen Park

Cook County is partnering with the Village of Evergreen Park to provide funding for projects in the Village’s Capital Improvement Plan. The work includes resurfacing roadways; curb and gutter removal and replacement; and drainage repairs and adjustments. Sidewalk removal and replacement will include the installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps.

“These agreements allow us to partner with municipalities throughout Cook County to ensure that we are able to undertake projects vital to economic growth and our residents’ quality of life,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “These transportation projects directly address the needs of businesses and our whole community.”
