Cook County Board Approves Funding to Improve Transportation Throughout Suburban Cook County
The Cook County Board of Commissioners approved funding this week for transportation projects and initiatives led by the County’s Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH). These vital projects boost economic development, build up regional transportation and improve quality of life throughout Cook County.
Invest in Cook Funding
Village of Thornton
DoTH is partnering with the Village of Thornton to begin work associated with their $100,000 2021 Invest in Cook award for a planning/feasibility study to determine safe and efficient access to public transportation options, specifically the Metra Electric Homewood Station and Pace Route 352 Halsted.
Village of Merrionette Park
DoTH is partnering with the Village of Merrionette Park to begin work associated with their $250,000 2021 Invest in Cook award for construction and construction engineering associated with resurfacing a half mile of Meadow Lane and Harry Rogowski Drive Street.
Village of Sauk Village
DoTH is partnering with the Village of Sauk Village to begin work associated with their $100,000 2021 Invest in Cook award for an engineering study of Sauk Trail and Torrence Avenue pedestrian improvements. Sidewalk gaps will be filled along the north and south sides of Sauk Trail as well as the east and west sides of Torrence Avenue to improve walkability. Additional improvements that will be considered in the project design include pedestrian countdown signals, curb ramps, landings, detectable warning tiles and high visibility crosswalks.
Contract Awards
Pavement Maintenance
The Board approved a $6.5 million construction contract with Plote Construction Inc. in Hoffman Estates to perform pavement maintenance in north suburban Cook County along Quentin Road from Northwest Highway to Lake Cook Road, Old Orchard Road from Skokie Boulevard to Gross Point Road as well as Roselle Road from Wise Road to Higgins Road and Palatine Road to Baldwin Road. Additional improvements include curb and gutter replacement as well as ADA sidewalk upgrades.
The Board approved a $17.4 million construction contract with Gallagher Asphalt Corporation in Thornton to perform pavement maintenance in south suburban Cook County along 94th Avenue, 135th Street, 167th Street, Wolf Road, Joe Orr Road, Steger Road and Narragansett Avenue. Additional improvements include curb and gutter replacement as well as ADA sidewalk upgrades.
Electrical and Design Services
The Board approved an engineering services contract with Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd. in Rosemont to complete electrical and traffic signal engineering as well as design services that will be used for the department’s traffic signal design and signal timing, roadway lighting design, engineering plan review services and other engineering tasks. This is a three-year base contract with two, one year renewal options.
Bridge Improvements
DoTH is approved to conduct preliminary engineering and environmental studies for the removal and replacement of five bridges across the County:
- Bremen Township: Reconstruction of 143rd Street Bridge over Tinley Creek
- Village of South Holland: Reconstruction of 170th Street Bridge over Thorn Creek.
- Villages of Glenview and Wilmette: Reconstruction of East Lake Avenue Bridge over Middle Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River.
- Village of Schaumburg: Reconstruction of Meacham Road Bridge over Salt Creek.
- Village of Glenview: Reconstruction of Lehigh Avenue Bridge over East Lake Avenue.
