Cook County Board Approves Funding for Transportation-Related Initiatives in the Southland

Cook County partnering with local municipalities to begin improvements associated with their 2020 Invest in Cook awards

The Cook County Board of Commissioners approved funding today to further transportation projects and initiatives led by the County’s Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH). These are vital projects that boost economic development, build up regional transportation and improve quality of life throughout Cook County.

Village of University Park
DoTH and the Village of University Park are partnering to begin improvements associated with their 2020 Invest in Cook award that provides funding for planning services for the Steger Road Improvement Project. Steger Road is located near I-57, making it an appealing destination for industrial development. This plan will redesign Steger Road to create a roadway that can be used for multi modal travel, residential traffic and freight. This partnership provides reimbursement for up to $150,000 for the County’s share of the costs associated with this project.

Village of Sauk Village
DoTH and the Village of Sauk Village are partnering to begin improvements associated with their 2020 Invest in Cook award that provides funding for a feasibility study for the Old Plank Road Trail Extension Study. This study will evaluate a potential extension of the Old Plank Road Trail, creating a bi-state trail connection. Currently, the eastern end of the trail is in Chicago Heights, but an extension could connect it to the Pennsy Greenway in Schererville, Indiana. This will bridge a critical gap in the regional trail system that will connect residents and visitors to key destinations and help revitalize the Southland. This partnership provides reimbursement for up to $300,000 for the County’s share of the costs associated with this project.
