Cook County Launches ADA Transition Plan Public Outreach Website

Residents encouraged to review plan online and provide feedback to improve roadway right-of-way accessibility

The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) announced the launch of its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan public outreach website today. The ADA Transition Plan provides a pathway to make County rights-of-way accessible to all users of the roadways, including those with disabilities.

“Cook County is committed to providing equitable accommodations for all residents,” said DoTH Superintendent Jennifer “Sis” Killen. “This transition plan provides a strategy for making improvements to the County’s transportation network to help us best serve the public. We invite our residents to visit the website, review the plan and provide input on how to improve accessibility.”

The ADA Transition Plan is structured to complement and promote the goals of the Cook County Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), which prioritizes pedestrians, transit and other transportation alternatives, promotes equal access and maintains and modernizes existing facilities within the public right-of-way. The plan includes the results of a self-evaluation of the County-maintained highway network that was performed in the summer of 2017, which included the accessibility of curb ramps, crosswalks and pedestrian pushbuttons. These assets will be continually updated as they are improved. 

Through videos, downloads and other accessible methods, the public outreach website aims to explain more about the DoTH ADA Transition Plan, including identification of barriers to access, a schedule for meeting ADA compliance and a method for the public to provide input.

The Cook County DoTH ADA Transition Plan was first published online in July 2021, meeting requirements of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The transition plan public outreach website will be open to receive public comments for a period of three months from April 15, 2024 to July 15, 2024. Cook County invites all to visit the website and provide comments.
