Cook County Releases 2024 Highway Construction Project Map

18 new projects are slated to begin work this year

The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) released its 2024 highway construction project map today. The interactive map, created by the Cook County Bureau of Technology's Geographic Information Systems Division, includes all construction projects underway or scheduled to begin this year. Projects that preserve, modernize and expand the County's transportation system are featured on the map.

"During the County's construction season, it's vital to provide our residents with information and updates that will help them travel safely and efficiently throughout our community," said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. "We're pleased to offer this convenient platform that will help residents understand when and where construction projects are underway so they can plan for potential slowdowns or consider alternate routes." 

There are 41 projects on the mobile-friendly map. Three new projects will break ground this spring, 23 projects are continuing work from previous years and DoTH anticipates starting 15 additional projects later this year. Information shown for each construction project includes an expected start date, overview, benefits and scope. DoTH will add projects as construction begins and the public is encouraged to visit the site regularly throughout construction season for updates.

“The 2024 construction schedule include roadway reconstruction and resurfacing, bridge replacement and rehabilitation, traffic signal modernization and replacement, drainage improvements and large-scale projects,” said DoTH Superintendent Jennifer “Sis” Killen. “Our department’s activities will benefit over 20 municipalities across the County this year.”

Residents can enter an address to view information regarding nearby construction projects, click the orange highlighted sections on the map or use the arrows in the upper left to toggle through the projects.

In addition to the 2024 highway construction project map, DoTH has also partnered with the Villages of Skokie, Stickney and Forest View on websites for major projects along Old Orchard Road (Woods Dr. to Skokie Blvd.) and Central Ave. Bridge (I-55 to Pershing Road). The sites include overall project information and details about the current stage of construction. Both projects are anticipated to last for multiple construction seasons, with completion targeted for 2025.
