Statement from Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle on U.S. Supreme Court Travel Ban Decision
As a former history teacher, I am well aware of the hostility so often directed at immigrants throughout our history. Wave after wave of immigrants have had to endure discrimination once they arrived on our shores. I am disappointed that the U.S. Supreme Court today narrowly upheld the Trump Administration's travel ban, which clearly targets certain populations. We take heart in Justice Sotomayor’s dissent, in which she stated that “a reasonable observer would conclude that the Proclamation was driven primarily by anti-Muslim animus, rather than by the Government’s asserted national-security justifications.”
The Trump administration’s travel ban does not represent our values in Cook County. We will continue to welcome all who seek refuge and a safe place to call home.
