The $1.25 million program funded vital improvements to 30 veteran-owned homes throughout the County
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle joined the County’s Department of Veterans Affairs along with representatives from Rebuilding Together Metro Chicago (RTMC) and other elected officials to announce the completion of the Veteran Home Repair Program. In partnership with RTMC, Cook County allocated $1.25 million to complete indoor and outdoor repairs to 30 veteran-owned homes throughout Cook County.
Cook County Courthouse Cooling Centers Open During Excessive Heat
Cooling centers available to all residents across County
Cook County is opening cooling centers as heat indices as high as 100 are forecast for the region from Saturday through Tuesday.
Cooling centers will be open 24 hours at the County’s Skokie, Maywood and Markham courthouses from Saturday, June 21 at noon through Tuesday, June 24, at 5:00 p.m. Residents who do not have adequate access to air conditioning are advised to seek respite at a cooling center.

Amid financial uncertainty and unpredictability being caused at the federal level, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle today unveiled the preliminary forecast for the County’s Fiscal Year 2026, showing a projected gap of $211.4 million across the County’s General and Health Funds.
Despite the fiscal pressures and economic instability created by federal actions, this represents a decrease from last year’s $218.2 million gap. The FY2026 gap is also significant drop from the peak of the pandemic and its $409.6 million gap.
