President Preckwinkle Lauds the Illinois General Assembly for Advancing Legislation that Strengthens Cook County

Today, Cook County Board President applauded legislative efforts in Springfield benefitting residents of Cook County. In total, seven significant bills championed by Cook County, focusing on topics ranging from health equity to community development, passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly and now await Governor JB Pritzker’s signature into law.

Cook County's First Residential Tenant Landlord Ordinance Goes into Effect June 1

Today, June 1, all provisions of the Residential Tenant Landlord Ordinance (RTLO), legislation which, for the first time, provides protections for the more than 245,000 suburban renter households and their landlords, goes into effect. The RTLO, chiefly sponsored by Commissioner Scott Britton and Commissioner Kevin Morrison, was unanimously approved January 28, 2021.

County Officials and Suburban Mayors Push for Statewide Homeowner Relief, Increased Capacity for Municipalities to Rescue Vacant Buildings

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle today joined a coalition of suburban mayors and other local leaders to support the systemic reforms proposed in the Homeowner Relief and Community Recovery Act. The legislation, Senate Bill 1721, will empower communities and local governments to transform vacant properties into homes and businesses and put them back on the tax rolls more quickly while helping residents stay in their homes by reducing predatory interest rates.

Four Incentives Approved by Cook County Board Designed to Grow Vital Communities

Today, Cook County Commissioners approved four proposals from President Toni Preckwinkle’s Bureau of Economic Development (BED) that will provide tax incentives to businesses in Cook County.

The incentives, designed to promote economic growth, were approved in the following communities: Elk Grove Village, Markham, Matteson and Melrose Park.

CHICAGO — Declaring it time to put an end to a system that perpetuates redlining and the growth of vacant properties, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle today announced she is joining the Cook County Land Bank Authority, Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough, and Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer in calling for reform of the Cook County Scavenger Sale, a limit on interest rates charged to homeowners under a county lien, and a new strategic plan to recover and revitalize blighted communities.
