President Preckwinkle and County Board Honor Military Veterans As Part of Silver Star Service Banner Program

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and County Commissioners today recognized 36 military veterans for their sacrifice and service to nation under the annual Silver Star Service Banner program. President Preckwinkle created the County’s first-ever Department of Veterans Affairs in 2013. Among its tasks is to continue the tradition begun in 2008 of honoring Silver Star veterans at a Cook County Board meeting. The veterans were saluted for their service in wartime during the Board meeting and at a reception beforehand.

President Preckwinkle Nominates Five for Posts on Health and Hospitals System’s Governing Board

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle today announced five nominees to the governing board of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System (CCHHS).

The five are Sidney Thomas, Mary Driscoll, Mary Richardson-Lowry, Dr. Virginia Bishop and Layla P. Suleiman Gonzalez. The nominees will be presented to the Cook County Board of Commissioners at their meeting today, then considered by the Board’s Legislation and Intergovernmental Relations Committee with a final vote anticipated at the Board’s July 13 meeting.

Cook County Partners with Philip Morris’s Canine Unit to Combat Illicit Cigarette Trafficking

Cook County’s Department of Revenue was in the field this week with Philip Morris USA’s Brand Integrity Department’s canine unit.  The company has partnered with Cook County and other law enforcement agencies to help combat illicit cigarette trafficking. Its dogs are trained to detect the odor of tobacco and to alert their handler where tobacco is concealed. With the aid of a tobacco sniffing hound, Cook County was able to conduct 71 investigations, issue 18 citations, and write citations for $86,100 in fines over the course of three days.
