Long-needed road reconstruction projects along with pavement resurfacing, bridge repair and improving drainage will mark Cook County’s 2015 road construction season.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle unveiled a number of road and bridge projects planned by the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways for the upcoming spring and summer months, including completing major reconstruction of Crawford Avenue from Devon Avenue to Oakton Street in Lincolnwood and Skokie.

Surge in Canine Flu Cases Demands Extra Precautions by Pet Owners

Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control (CCDARC) is cautioning dog owners that a recent increase in reported cases of canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) could last for several weeks before it subsides. Dr. Donna Alexander, CCDARC administrator, said voluntary reporting to the Department of disease surveillance conducted by veterinarians has identified more than 1,000 cases of CIRD, or canine flu, unrelated to kennel cough, as well as five fatalities.

Amy Campanelli was sworn in as Cook County’s newest Public Defender by Appellate Court Justice Stuart Palmer during a ceremony held this afternoon in the Cook County Board Room.

Campanelli was nominated to serve a six-year term as Public Defender by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle in March. Her appointment was unanimously approved by the Board of Commissioners during today’s Board Meeting.

President Preckwinkle Generating New Revenue by Cracking Down on Cook County Tax Scofflaws

From pilsners to parking lots, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is aggressively tracking down tax scofflaws in an effort to increase County revenue while protecting honest taxpaying businesses and residents. Through a comprehensive compliance and enforcement initiative directed by the Cook County Department of Revenue (DOR), $6.7 million in previously unidentified taxes were collected from businesses like microbreweries and parking lots in 2014. In 2015, DOR has already pinpointed $3.5 million.

First 2015 Low-Cost Rabies Vaccine Clinics Scheduled by County Animal Control Department

Cook County’s inaugural low-cost rabies vaccine clinic of 2015 will take place Wednesday, March 18, from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. inside the Broadway Armory, 5917 N. Broadway, Chicago. Another clinic has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 5 at Joy Fellowship Baptist Church 2025 E. 175th St., Lansing.
The rabies shot is the only vaccine that will be provided at these two clinics.

Cost of a one-year rabies shot is $7 for dogs and cats; a three-year rabies shot is $21. Ferret vaccines, which have a one-year duration, are $9. Only cash or checks are accepted; no credit or debit cards.
