Sheriff Dart Encourages Safety as 4th of July Approaches

Every year the Cook County Sheriff’s Police confiscate thousands of pounds of illegal fireworks throughout Cook County and Sheriff Dart is encouraging everyone to use caution and be safe during this 4th of July season. Although the rules vary based on what part of Illinois you live in, for the most part, nearly ALL fireworks are illegal in Illinois. All “consumer fireworks”— such as M-80’s — are illegal and you will be arrested if you are found in possession of them.

Forest Preserve District Opens New Kickapoo Woods Bicycle and Walking Trail in Riverdale, IL

Forest Preserve District of Cook County General Superintendent Arnold Randall, Forest Preserve District Board Commissioner Deborah Sims, Harvey Mayor Eric Kellogg, Dixmoor Mayor Keevan Grimmett and other project partners and community leaders were on hand for the official opening of the Kickapoo Woods Bicycle and Walking Trail. The ribbon cutting was followed by a screening of the movie Red Tails, the first in the FPDCC’s Films in the Forest series this summer.

City, County Announce $33 Million In Savings As First Year Of Collaboration Comes To A Close

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced that in the first year of the City-County collaboration, $33.4 million has been saved, and that over 85 percent of the savings will recur on an annual basis. "We are energized by the numbers we’ve achieved. Today’s results show that the collaboration is on target to reach, and likely surpass, our initial goals,” President Preckwinkle said.

Criminal Courthouse Renamed After Retired Judge And Civil Rights Leader George N. Leighton

Elected officials, judges, and the public joined the Honorable George N. Leighton and his family on Friday, June 29th for the renaming and dedication ceremony at the Cook County Criminal Court Building. The courthouse, located at 26th and California, will now be known as “The Honorable George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building”. The renaming commemorates Judge Leighton’s decades of service to the justice system and the example he set for those in the legal profession everywhere.

Update: An Air Pollution Action Day has been declared for Chicago, IL, on Friday, August 24

The Illinois Partners for Clean Air and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency have extended the previously issued Air Pollution Action Day Alerts to Friday, August 24th. The continued high temperatures and low wind speeds are expected to lead to elevated ground-level ozone in the Chicago Metropolitan area.
