Winter Storm Could Bring Heavy Snowfall Across Cook County

The Department of Transportation and Highways urges residents to keep emergency kit in each car when driving during winter weather

Cook County could see up to eight inches of snow as a winter storm moves across the area starting tonight. The County’s Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) is monitoring conditions and has resources on standby to keep the 1,620 lane miles the County maintains, safe for drivers.

Dangerously low temperatures are forecast over the next few days. Snowstorms throughout the week will give way to bitterly cold subzero temperatures starting this weekend. The frigid climate creates hazardous conditions for residents and their pets. The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control reminds residents to take special precautions to keep their pets safe during this extremely cold and dangerous weather.

Medical Examiner’s Office Releases Preliminary 2023 Data

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is releasing preliminary statistics for cases it handled in 2023. The Office’s caseload continued to surpass pre-COVID levels, with 7,738 cases falling under the Office’s jurisdiction last year. This is a drop from a peak caseload of 16,047 in 2020. Before the pandemic began, the Office saw approximately 6,200 deaths in an average year. Much of the increase in caseload is attributed to opioid overdose deaths.

President Preckwinkle Joins Calumet Park Officials to Celebrate Completion of $2.4 Million Stormwater Management Project

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle joined Calumet Park Mayor Ronald Denson and other officials today to celebrate the completion of a $2.4 million stormwater management reconstruction project in Calumet Park that will greatly reduce flooding, increase water quality and improve drainage.

Cook County Increases Funding of the 2023 Source Grant to Support 3,000 Small Businesses

Today, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced Cook County will provide an additional $10 million of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to the 2023 Cook County Source Grant program, bringing the total amount available to assist small businesses to $50 million. This increase will allow the County to award a total of 3,000 grants to small businesses in Cook County, 500 more than originally possible. All grant applicants will receive an email communication regarding the status of their application on Friday, December 15, 2023.
