Cook County Warming Centers Open as Temperatures Drop

Temperatures could drop to record lows in the coming days. The Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security (EMRS) reminds residents to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and their families.

Municipalities and townships across Cook County are opening warming centers for residents. Residents who do not have adequate heating in their homes are encouraged to visit a warming center to ensure they remain safe.

Cook County Prepares for Snowfall

Accumulating snowfall is expected for the Monday morning commute. Cook County’s Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) is monitoring conditions and is ready to deploy all resources necessary to keep the 1,500 lane miles the County maintains safe for drivers.

DoTH advises drivers to take extra precautions during storms – slow down and watch for snow plows. The department reminds drivers that because this snowfall is coming so early in the season, they’ll have to take even more precautions because construction projects are still underway throughout the County.

Cook County Board Approves Department of Transportation and Highways Infrastructure Projects

Last week, the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved agreements between the County’s Department of Transportation and Highways with local municipalities. The intergovernmental agreements are designed to bolster economic development and quality of life throughout Cook County.

President Preckwinkle Announces New Name for County Emergency Management Department

New name reflects mission and service to Cook County residents and region

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced that the County’s Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has been renamed to the Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security (EMRS). Additionally, the department will also use the official Cook County seal instead as its logo moving forward. The County Board of Commissioners approved the name change during their proceedings last week.

Cook County Announces $8 million Grant Program to Increase Animal Shelter Space

Cook County Animal and Rabies Control (CCARC) is now accepting applications for its Housing Cook County’s Animals grant program. Housing Cook County’s Animals is an $8 million program that covers the costs of planning and construction of animal shelter facilities in Cook County. The goal of the program is to expand the capacity of existing nonprofit and governmental animal shelters to address current overcrowding, while providing housing for animals impounded by the CCARC.
