Distracted Driver Injures Three Cook County Highway Department Workers

On Monday, April 16th from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm the Cook County Department of Environmental Control and South Suburban College is sponsoring a free Prescription Drug Take-back program. This event is a low-cost, high-value opportunity to tackle a critical environmental issue. The EPA has asked people not to flush old medications, as trace elements have been found in groundwater. Each year, close to 5,000 tons of pharmaceutical and personal care products enter the waste stream. Many survive water treatment processes and end up in drinking water.

Cook County Treasurer's Office Announces 2011 Supplemental Scavenger Sale for Delinquent Property Taxes

Under Illinois law, the Treasurer's Office is required to conduct a Scavenger Sale every two years.

This court-ordered 2011 Supplemental Scavenger Sale, at which property taxes delinquent for two or more years will be sold, has been scheduled to commence on October 22, 2012. It will begin at 9:00 a.m. Seat selection is first-come, first-served. At the discretion of the Treasurer's Office, these hours may be extended or shortened to accommodate the sale schedule. The sale is expected to be completed on October 22, 2012.

Cook County Clerk Orr, Chicago Fire & Reavis High Register Voters

Cook County Clerk David Orr and the Chicago Fire’s Jay Nolly visited a Reavis High School soccer practice Wednesday afternoon to promote voter registration and urge students to get involved in the Nov. 6, 2012 Presidential Election. “If you don’t participate, it’s like your team playing a man short,” Orr said on the school’s soccer field, 6034 W. 77th St., Burbank.

Cook County State's Attorney Receives Federal Grant To Support Efforts To Combat Human Trafficking

The U.S. Justice Department has announced that it will renew a federal grant that supports the Cook County State’s Attorney’s efforts to combat human trafficking and the sex trafficking of minor children, according to State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

The $500,000 grant will provide funding over the next two years and will assist in enabling the State’s Attorney’s Human Trafficking Initiative to continue to provide training, programming and help link at-risk children and the victims of trafficking to agencies providing essential services.

Governor Pat Quinn Signs Bill to Make Board of Review Appeals Easier for Cook County Property Owners

On August 23rd, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed Senate Bill 3386 allowing the Cook County Board of Review to modernize operations and making it easier and more convenient for property owners to file appeals of the assessed values of their homes and businesses.  The signing ceremony took place at the Cook County Board of Review, where Governor Quinn was a Commissioner from 1982 to 1986.

Stroger Hospital of Cook County Hosts Komen Cure Tissue Bank Event, September 29th

How can you help in the fight against breast cancer? You can help by donating a tissue sample during an event at the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in Chicago from 8:30AM to 2:30PM. Saturday, September 29th. Participants can use the parking garage at 1800 West Polk St., which is adjacent to the hospital, free of charge. The tissue samples will be collected for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center, which is the first and only healthy breast tissue bank in the world. To date, more than 2,800 women have contributed breast tissue samples.

Cook County Clerk of the Court Brown Optimistic About E-Filing Expansion

Coming off the heels of her inaugural E-Court advisory Committee meeting, Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court says she is “optimistic” about an August 23, 2012 letter from Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride, in which he notes that the Illinois Supreme Court’s statewide plan to create uniform e-filing principles and standards is expected to be concluded “within the near future.”
