Cook County Department of Public Health Encourages Family Safety: September is Preparedness Month
September 2012 marks the ninth annual National Preparedness Month and Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) officials encourage residents to use this time to prepare for an emergency. Knowing what to do before, during and after an emergency is critical to keeping you and your family safe.
“The extreme weather our region has experienced in recent years has produced floods, excessive heat and even the blizzard of 2011,” said CCDPH interim chief operating officer, Sandra Martell, RN, DNP.

Board of Review Commissioner Cabonargi Announces More Property Tax Appeal Seminars
Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Michael M. Cabonargi will hold a series of property tax appeal seminars in the coming days and weeks. The seminars consist of a brief presentation on the assessment and property tax system followed by an opportunity for residents to receive assistance filing appeals, submitting evidence and asking Board of Review analysts any questions they may have regarding the appeal process.
Cook County Board Approves Lower Tax Rates for Vehicle Transfers Between Non-Retailers
On May 8, 2013 the Cook County Board of Commissioners today approved an amendment to lower tax rates on the transfer of motor vehicles between county residents.
The new rates, which take effect August 1, set a $90 tax on the transfer of motor vehicles nine years or older. Vehicles four to eight years old will be subject to a $175 tax. Vehicles three years old or newer will pay a $225 tax. Vehicle transfers between immediate family, certain business transactions and transfers to beneficiaries of an estate, will continue to have a $25 tax rate.
Preckwinkle Introduces Change to Parking Tax
On May 8, 2013, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle introduced an amendment that would lower the rate for many individuals who park in garages and lots.
After a change in state law, the County and the City of Chicago are able to implement a percentage-based rate, rather than a tiered structure. The County plans to impose a flat, 8.5% tax rate on parking garage fees.

A three day intensive Inner City Capital Connections Training has been announced by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC).
The actual training seminar, the Inner City Capital Connections (ICCC) program, is designed to help small businesses in economically distressed areas access capital, achieve sustainable growth, and connect with debt and equity providers. The three-day executive education seminar will be held at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business from June 6-8, 2013 and will led by Harvard Business School Professor Stephen Rogers.
