Cook County is undergoing a multi-year project to modernize our telephones and telecommunications infrastructure. Most traditional landline phones across the County will be replaced with a similar Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) enabled phone.

Why is VOIP Important for Cook County?

- It allows us to consolidate our telecommunications and data infrastructure, instead of using separate lines and switches for each — saving the County money.
What is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)?
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a method for using a group of tools to deliver audio or multimedia communications over Internet networks. Broadband phone service, for example, is a type of VoIP communication. VoIP can be used for audio, video, text messages or even faxing. The user experience of making a phone call via VoIP is the same as any other type of call.
While the buttons and operation of the new phones will be similar, the new phones will have enhanced features for consideration. For instance, voicemail can be integrated with County email and a single phone number can ringing both at your desk and your cell. Before your phones are replaced, instructors will lead training for staff and provide reference guides and additional details regarding the new phones.
