2011 Cook County Solid Waste Management Plan Update

As Directed by State Statute, the Cook County Solid Waste Plan is being updated and is now available in draft form for review and comment. The Plan Update will be the subject of a public hearing. An interactive summary of the report recommendations is presented below. A public hearing on the updated plan will take place on Wednesday, February 1st at 1 pm, in the Cook County Boardroom, 118 N. First couple of 2012 excited to live happily ever after

When Diana Basner first set eyes on Jeremy Nichols, his chivalry seemed to good to be true. Nichols intervened when a rude bus driver was berating a female passenger. I knew then he was something special, said Basner, a 27-year-old preschool teacher. That was five years ago. Basner stayed that night to make sure Nichols wouldn't get arrested. They started talking and learned they had both just finished the midnight shift at a Comcast call center in Schaumburg. Their first date was a few days later. Board of Review Commissioners Announce the Opening of Leyden, North Chicago, South Chicago, West Chicago, Thornton, and Wheeling Townships for Property Tax Assessment Appeal Filing

Commissioner Larry Rogers, Jr., Commissioner Michael M. Cabonargi, and Commissioner Dan Patlak announced today that the Cook County Board of Review is now open to accept property tax assessment appeals for Leyden, North Chicago, South Chicago, Thornton, West Chicago, and Wheeling Townships. Those taxpayers who own property within these townships and feel they have been over assessed have until Friday, January 20, 2012 to file an assessed valuation appeal with the Board of Review.

Survey: Heterosexual couples obtain civil unions for "solidarity with gay community"; Needing benefits cited as second most common reason

Heterosexual couples who have obtained civil unions in Cook County cite fairness or solidarity with the gay community as the number one reason to choose a civil union over marriage, according to a new survey conducted by Clerk David Orr's office. Twelve of 46 respondents, or 26 percent, cited political or ideological reasons such as equality and inclusiveness when asked why they opted for a civil union when they could legally marry.

Preckwinkle Supports Governor Quinn's Panel to Address State Pensions

Yesterday, Governor Pat Quinn announced that he will convene a panel tasked with addressing the well-documented pension problems currently facing the State of Illinois and governments at all levels. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle issued the following statement. “I strongly support Governor Quinn’s decision to take this important step toward solving the pension crisis. I hope that this panel will serve as a vehicle for sustainable solutions and productive dialogue from all stakeholders involved.

Reprieve For Homeowners Delinquent On Property Taxes

Legislation promoted by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will provide a window of relief to local homeowners delinquent on property taxes. Governor Pat Quinn signed Senate Bill 1335 into law late Friday evening, after the president urged his office to do so without delay. SB 1335 allows the Cook County Treasurer to delay the yearly tax sale for homeowners who are delinquent on their property taxes.
